MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a diagnostic equipment that’s used for the scanning and collection of detailed information about the organs and tissues in our body. When patients are positioned inside a cylindrical tube for examination, the process is known as Closed MRI. However, this type of MRI scan can cause claustrophobic reactions when obese or heavy set patients are placed in the diagnostic machine.
On the other hand, Open MRI, where the patient is placed in between two plates, is a good option for obese and claustrophobic people who are nervous and scared of closed MRI procedures. Let’s take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of open MRI

Though using open MRI results in a comfortable experience for the patient, radiologists find that these MRIs machines deliver images that are not clear, and of low quality, when compared with those of closed MRIs. This is because the closed MRI equipment is cylindrical in shape, and the magnet in the machine surrounds the patient’s entire body. The following are some disadvantages of doing open MRI;

Though usually the quality of the images or scanning is based on the magnetic strength, the quality also depends on the design of the equipment.
Closed MRI, as the name suggests is closed from all angles, which helps in scanning the patient’s body effectively, and provides excellent image quality. The time taken for diagnosis process will also be below as it has higher magnetic strength.
However, depending on the type of patients, radiologists prefer open MRIs too. If the patient is uncomfortable when sent into the chamber, the images could be of low quality as the patient tends to breathe heavily due to anxiety. Most patients, especially those who are obese, and kids cannot remain still for long, which results in low-quality images.
